Kunefe Apple Tart

Kunefe Apple Tart

Who wants a slice? It’s crispy on the edges, moist in the center and amazingly scrumptious!
Kunefe pastry is very similar to baklava pastry. This was my take on the traditional Turkish and Greek shredded baklava dough recipe. I added sliced apples and baked it to perfection then drenched the tart in cinnamon syrup. My house smells like an apple orchard. The Kunefe or the Kataifi dough is widely available in the international supermarkets.

Ingredients

5 green apples peeled, cored and sliced
1 tbsp of brown sugar
Chopped nuts for topping(optional)
For the crust:
1 lbs kataifi or kunefe dough (1 box)
1 tsp ground cinammon
a pinch ground clove
4 tbsp of melter coconut oil or vegan butter
For the syrup.
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of water
peel of 1 lemon
1 cinnamon stick

Method

1. Add all the ingredients for the syrup into a small pot and bring to the boil. As soon as the sugar has dissolved, the syrup is ready. About 8 min. Leave the syrup aside to cool completely.
2. Melt the vegan butter or coconut oil and with a cooking brush the oil to the bottom and sides of a baking pan.
3. Unroll the Kataifi dough from the plastic wrap. Make sure dough is completely defrosted if it was frozen previously. Work the dough with your hands, tearing apart the shreds and gently spreading the strands out a bit if they clump together, in order to get fluffy. Cover the Kataifi dough with a slightly damp towel.
4. Take the melted coconut oil or vegan butter and pour it over the dough. Gently mix the shredded dough, covering it with oil.
5. Place the kataifi dough in the pan. Layer it evenly all over the pan.
6. Starting from the top of the dough start lining the sliced apples as close to each other as possible. Use your creativity. I layered it in different angles. Sprinkle with some brown sugar.
7. Bake the tart in preheated oven at 350 F for about 1 hour (on the middle rack), until it’s golden brown on the edges and crispy.
8. Take the tart out of the oven and slowly pour the cold syrup over the hot tart. Let it cool and Enjoy!
